Article #21: Mid-Century What Is It?

Style... keeping you in the loop about... by Design and the World Of Design and Style..

A Style From The Early 1900s

It is a term often used.

Mid-century furniture.

But what does that really mean?

So we thought why not do an article about it for our customers.

So here it is.

Mid-century is a furniture style that was adapted in the early 1900s. It gained world-wide attention after World War II.

But why did it become so popular after World War II?

The war brought about a shortage of materials.

And that meant furniture designers had to be innovative and creative in what materials they could use.

Wood that once was disregarded for making furniture was used.

The Danes were in the forefront of this trend using rosewood and teak more than often but not always.

And that's how the phrase Danish modern came about.

And gradually Danish modern was associated with teak and rosewood only.

But in the 1960s Danish modern fell out of favour with consumers.

People wanted something new and fresh and Danish modern fell by the wayside as other new fabrics and materials became the trendy thing to buy.

But as so often happens an old favourite was revived and Danish modern was back in vogue.

The reason?

Modern apartments and homes were becoming smaller and Danish modern was a perfect fit for these smaller places.

So check out our vast selection of Danish mid-century furniture. We are Western Canada's largest importer of mid-century furniture from Denmark.

All of our latest items are on our website.

The World Of Design - New And Old

The design world.

It's a case of the old and the new.

Poul Henningsen - Revolutionary Lamp Design

Poul Henningsen.

He became the first Danish designer to become an expert in lighting theory.

Although he was a professional artist and his talents were numerous, he wrote poetry, he is best known for his lamps.

In 1924 he designed a multi-shade lamp. It was the first of what later became known as the "PH-lamp".

What made the lamp so unusual was that the design was based on scientific analysis of a lamp shade's function.

The size, shape, and position of the lamp shades determine the distribution of the light and the amount of glare.

In 1924 this lamp won a competition for light fitting at the Paris World Exhibition, and is known as the "Paris lamp".

Poul Henningsen maintained the principle of the Paris lamp throughout his lifetime.

Poul Henningsen, a fascinating man to be sure and one that changed design history.
