Taking Care of Rosewood
Rosewood.
One of the most the most beautiful woods there are.
With its richly-hued timbers, brownish dark veining, it is elegant and classic, gorgeous and rich looking.
Rosewood is strong and heavy.
It is used in flooring, furniture, turnery (wooden products created on a lathe), musical instruments, and wooden chess sets (black pieces).
The easiest way to keep it looking its best is to dust frequently.
And every once in a while use you can use either beeswax or petroleum jelly.
It is worth trying both out on a small area to see which works best.
Copenhagen - Teak, Rosewood Furniture
Copenhagen.
One of the world's most livable cities.
One of the world's great cities.
A city of great culture, food and the city that gave birth to the modern designs for teak and rosewood furniture that are enjoying a world-wide revival.
Twice a year our own Jeremy makes the long trek from Vancouver to Copenhagen.
For two weeks he scours the auction houses and retail stores searching for the best quality rosewood and teak furniture.
He has been doing this for two years.
Once he has made his decisions of what to buy the furniture is packed in giant containers for its long journey (it takes about four weeks) to Vancouver.
On his last trip Jeremy bought enough furniture to fill up two big containers.
We now have it all displayed for you to come by and take a look at.
There are some amazing items at some amazing prices.
The selection is varied and huge.
So huge that it makes us Western Canada's largest teak and rosewood furniture dealer.
We hope to see you soon and to be of service to you.
Here are some of the latest acquisitions.
Hans Wegner - A Giant Of Danish Teak Design
He was the son of a shoe maker.
He trained as a cabinetmaker with a master cabinetmaker.
In 1938 he became an architect.
In 1940 he started his career as the world's pre-eminent designer of Danish teak and rosewood furniture.
His name was Hans Wegner.
In 1940 he joined two other well-known Danish furniture designers, Arne Jacobsen and Erik ller, to design furniture for a new city hall in the town of Arhus.
He also started to work with 'minister' cabinetmaker Johannes Hansen in 1940 and showed his first furniture in the famous Hansen store.
Johannes Hansen was more than twice as old as the 26 year-old Wegner.
But the unique collaboration between the two became the undisputed recognition of Danish furniture design.
In fact, it was the main reason for its worldwide recognition in the fifties and sixties.
Denmark's cultural institutions recognized that early on.
In 1942 the Copenhagen Museum of Art and Industry acquired the first Wegner chair.
Wegner started his own design office in 1943 and one year later he began to design the first of a long series of "Chinese (Ming)" chairs.
They were inspired by portraits of Danish merchants sitting in Ming chairs.
His chairs became his signature trademarks.
His best known were the ones used by Richard Nixon and John Kennedy during the famous presidential debates shown on CBS Television in the U.S.
Wegner died earlier this year at age 92.
